The Newark Federal Courthouse Murals

Two murals were recently completed and installation at the Newark Federal Courthouse to hang in Judge Dennis Cavanaugh's courtroom.  The original artwork was produced in 1939 by artist Tanner M. Clark of Somerville New Jersey for the courthouse.   Judge Guy L. Fake believed one of the murals depicted pain, anguish and sorrow and felt the mural may unfairly sway a jury overseeing an accidental injury case.  The murals were never originally hung and became damaged over the course of time.

Artists Mark Romanoski and Arletta Tell were commissioned to reproduce the 8' x 6' murals onto canvas.  Working from black and white photos, the murals took approximately two and a half months to complete.  Upon completion, each mural was mounted over stretcher bars in a gallery wrap fashion, then delivered to their new home at The Newark Federal Courthouse, where they now hang in Judge Dennis Cavanaugh's courtroom.  The formal unveiling of the murals took place at the courthouse on Wednesday May 14, 2008 along with the unveiling of a statue entitled "Justice".
